First CBAM certificate price to be published in April

First CBAM certificate price published

The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has reached another key milestone with the publication of the first CBAM certificate price for 2026 on 7 April 2026.

CBAM aims to create a level playing field by applying a carbon price to selected imported goods such as steel, aluminium, cement, and fertilisers, preventing carbon leakage and supporting the EU’s climate objectives.

CBAM pricing mechanism

As of 2026, CBAM has entered its financial phase. Importers will be required to purchase certificates corresponding to the emissions embedded in their imports.

For 2026:

  • CBAM certificate prices are calculated quarterly
  • Each price reflects the average EU ETS auction price
  • Prices apply only to emissions from imports during the respective quarter

From 2027 onwards:

  • Prices will be calculated and published weekly

Published CBAM prices

The European Commission will publish CBAM certificate prices on the following dates:

  • 7 April 2026 (first price published)
  • 6 July 2026
  • 5 October 2026
  • 4 January 2027

Although authorised CBAM declarants will only start purchasing certificates from February 2027 (covering 2026 imports), the Commission has begun publishing prices in advance to improve transparency and provide market certainty.

Purpose of early publication

Early publication of CBAM prices ensures:

  • Greater transparency for importers and stakeholders
  • Reduced risk of unofficial or inconsistent price estimates
  • Better planning for compliance costs

This marks another step toward full operational implementation of CBAM across the EU.
